i. am. so. very. sick. :(

last night i couldn't get warm. i went to sleep around 11 and at 11:30 i was freezing. i was already using a sheet & a blanket, but adding another blanket didn't help. michael woke up i was shivering so hard, and he added a comforter to no effect. then i put on thick socks, pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and i was still cold. we turned down the air conditioner, but no luck. finally we turned off the air conditioner entirely, and i was able to stop chattering long enough to fall asleep -- only to wake up broiling later, with my clothes & sheet sticky with sweat. but if i tried to remove or shift one of the wrappings, i would begin to shiver.

now i don't feel like eating or even moving because anything rubbing my skin gives me the chills. in addition, amelia's status as an endoscopy patient is uncertain because she managed to find the food bag & help herself, even though she's supposed to be off food till the appointment. when i find the person who gave this to me i'm going to kick his or her ass!

on a happier note....
rob's arrived in corvallis! whoo hoo! i'm so glad for him! and brian has agreed to drop by saturday night since he can't come to the birthday celebration the weekend after. he'll be the first houseguest to use the new futon! :D

amelia seems more alert today, though it might be a side affect of hunger, as we can't feed her for 48 hours, and she wasn't eating anything before, either. the silver lining is also a drastic reduction in the amount of gifts. maybe amelia should just have her own blog....

with all this cat-u-drama, i've been lax about what else i've been doing with my time, and my former carefree days of reading, shopping at zupans and wandering longingly to elephant's deli look like they're over for a while, at least. as previously noted, my email volume has shot way up thanks to craigslist and i'm busy scheduling & attending social events. i've now gone to the tao of tea, sushi town & veritable quandry, among others, which are places i would have liked to have gone and was glad to have new people to go with. tonight: demetri's & washington park; tomorrow: chez machin; friday: mt. tabor. so in that sense, the craigslist ad has been very successful. i also managed to land a gig as an artist's model, which is harder than it looks, thank you very much! in addition, michael & i watched the wicker man dvd, and i gotta place it in the "odd, and not necessarily in a good way" and "glad i saw it, but won't see it again" categories, along with picnic at hanging rock. for a great deal of the movie i kept thinking, why did john want me to see this before burning man? -- until the end, of course.

what's that? unpacking? oh, look at the time...

hey, matt found me! *waves* i think the only people left who don't know i'm here are doug & miriam. once i figure out the whole birthday celebration bit aug 9/10, there will be invites all around.

i can't even imagine all the circumstances that led to this craigslist posting. it's too bad craigslist doesn't archive postings, as i know this will fall away fairly soon.

amelia has been at best lethargic and at worst i've called her name just to make sure she was still alive. she's not eating or drinking and yesterday was vomiting in addition to the traditional gifts left in the art room. so i called the vet today and he wants her to come in for an enoscopy on thursday. i'll leave her there in the morning & pick her up in the evening. i'm supposed to stop feeding her tonight (not a problem if she's not eating anything) and give her a laxative which i'm sure will be the highlight of the next couple of days. *sighs*

[#] [0]
so who wants to play the "where's rob?" game? let's see: he left albuquerque sunday to visit his family in colorado springs. yesterday he might have driven 10 hours, which would have taken him most of the way through wyoming and if he was really pushing it, into utah. so today he'll probably be in idaho, and he'll probably be in corvallis tomorrow or thursday. he'll have to tell me later if any of this is remotely accurate. :)

my head's swimming. i posted a little ad on craigslist so i could meet people in portland who aren't related to michael (not that those aren't fine folks, mind you *waves*), and so far have gotten 110 responses (this is just inital contact responses, not follow-up mail). i reply to each one because i would hate it if nobody replied to me. so far, only one has been truly evil and the rest have been very nice but it's keeping me awake every night till after 2 a.m. just to juggle it all and keep my 1-day-more-or-less response window. g'night.

well, that was unexpected! elizabeth called out of the blue to tell me the person they hired when i applied for the job at psu is looking to offload some of his webct admin duties, and elizabeth told him i would be perfect! :D so i called him and i think we had a good talk. it would be just webct admin; no instructional development at all. wish me luck!

yesterday was busy! michael had to work for an hour or so, then brennan, mila & philip came over to play card games. we played citadel, which i quite liked (i'm sure it didn't hurt that i won by a long shot), and chez greek (which philip won). and philip, the cool guy that he is, brought me the wicker man dvd! it's like what goethe says about committment: "what you can do, or dream you can do, begin it! boldness has genius, power and magic in it." things happen.

then michael & i went to another psu librarian's birthday party. despite the fact that i knew hardly anyone, i had a good time! the food was excellent and we were there very late. i got to meet many people i hear michael talk about (including elizabeth's "pregnant christian driver" partner, jill! :), and i guess they got to meet me. and i got to talk to some academics about online courses, which was a mixed blessing: i can talk a good game, so why can't i do anything about it? apparently jennifer had also worked for lewis & clark, though, and i was amazed at how segregated we became, despite her best efforts to shuttle between both sides of the yard.

today i'll be at david zuttermeister's studio. don't know when i'll be home yet.

whoo-hoo! finally, i can speak more russian than "very good!" and "i don't know" and "i don't speak russian very well," thanks to this little article about russian interjections. aga.

i found this gem through a blog called mildly malevolent, which also has an excellent commentary about being well read and if that's changed somewhat over generations. he gives short shrift to the guardian's view about academic learning, though, and i tend to agree with it. not that i think that tv is an exceptionally "valid" source (mostly because it's so difficult to filter the layers of propoganda), but i'm biased to think the nature of learning is changing and most universities and employers aren't recognizing it.

john says i should rent the wicker man before i go to burning man. an imdb user summed it up thus: "as the sun goes down on sanity, the sky glows bright from madness!" well, gosh, how can i not watch it after something like that? sounds like a good lovecraft/innsmouth movie. he recommends the library or greencine to find those kinds of movies.

well, heck. there seems to be some dispute about the color of my hair. alex says he would have never considered calling it red, and michael calls it auburn. in certain lights it certainly is browner than it used to be before i shaved it, and i think i'm still having trouble separating myself from my "long red hair" self-image (though that was exactly what that experiment was supposed to resolve). so now i'm feeling guilty about a craigslist description i wrote; i hope nobody holds it against me. at the moment i'm calling it "tarnished copper" as it seems to me to be the color of an old penny. hmm. :(

update 07.25.03: brian says my hair is, "in one word: auburn. in more words, the color one sees in late sunset when there's a forest fire to the west and the already-red light filters through the high trail of smoke from the unseen fire." *pauses* i can live with that. thanks, brian! :)

i was cold today! i think that's the first time since i moved here. tonight we're meeting alex at the jantzen beach borders for a reading by chuck palahniuk (of fight club fame). he'll be reading from his newest book, fugitives and refugees which is about portland and might even be worth buying. then we might go to dinner w/ alex, though i'm arming myself w/ a cheese quesadilla, just in case.

amelia is worsening. we woke up with three gifts and i got three more during the day, and they're just puddles. i sobbed an email to michael saying i couldn't take it anymore, which is ironic because he's been much more patient about the situation than i have. i called the vet but of course he's busy. he'll get back to me. sometime.

speaking of which, upstairs jennifer emailed to tell me about nina's bout w/ colitis. the only thing that worked for her was a steroid shot: "(prednisone or something)." also, she says the people who are now her downstairs neighbors have a black cat w/ green eyes which almost gotten eaten by a coyote, despite her warnings. and "lois? louise? your neighbor from downstairs asked, "did our girl make it?!" she was very happy to hear you arrived in tact." hee. :)

other than that, more burning man planning. i want to tie this into my birthday, but i don't know how yet.

i'm a licensed oregon driver now! i actually got 100% on the knowledge test ("we don't get those very often," the dmv woman said). i guess reading the manual (pdf) actually helps. :)

yeah, i'm going to burning man. i'll be 30.

it's easier to get another social security card than it is to get an oregon driver's license! i have all the documents oregon needs to prove my age, but they need different documents to prove my identity, and i only have one of them (you need two). anyway, one of them is my social security card, which i'm not able to find. *bites lip*

oh, man....! i met david zuttermeister tonight, an artist who's going to burning man, and i am aaaalllllmmmmmmoooooost convinced to go myself. the price tag ($225) is giving me the willies, as the whole trip will be about $500 at a time when i would prefer not to be spending any money (seriously, as it's the end of august and therefore the end of my savings). but will i ever have a better time to do this, a time when i don't have a job and a time when i'm actively searching for new experiences?

(and perhaps a contribution might make a good birthday present...? :)

so when michael got home and asked me what i did today, i was at a loss. there was the sleeping in, the waking up, the eating of lunch, the internet, and then michael came home. and it seemed pretty amazing 6 hours could just evaporate with nothing to show for it.

it helped when he asked about the driver's manual and i realized i had gotten almost all the way through it, and yes, i got dan to give me another virtual domain for a resume gap remedy (details later), and yes, i had backed up the palm because i thought it was about to die, and yes, i had spent some time following up on job leads which seem more unhopeful every day, but really. i was a little appalled, especially as i hadn't gotten dressed yet.

but you know what? if this is the time i get before returning to work for the rest of my life, why shouldn't i enjoy it?

yesterday i took my craigslist charge to the airport, where he was bound for germany and would be returning to phoenix. he was so nervous he emailed me no less than four times to make sure i wouldn't be late. when i arrived a bit early, i heard one of his roomates say, "is she hot? we've got to see her!" *sighs* well, there goes the easiest money i've ever made.

then michael, john, bryan, his girlfriend winter, and i went to see the league of extraordinary gentleman, which was better than i thought it was going to be, and certainly better than pirates of the carribean. i really liked how they handled dr. jekyl & mr. hyde, and sean connery's character wasn't the overwhelming presence i had feared. and of course, it had great neo-victorian style. john came home with us for dinner & discussion and then i took him home. by the time i got home, michael was already asleep.

i also tried calling rob yesterday, afraid he might have already left for his trek northwest. i didn't reach him, but he posted his remaining days on one of his last journal entries, and i'm sad to lose his voice in my daily readings.

today i studied the oregon driver's manual so that i can get an oregon driver's license this week. a week later and my finger is much better than i expected it to be. amelia, however, is not.

yesterday we went to the Mid-Summer's Renaissance Faire w/ john & phillip. it was small & hot, but there were trees and it was charming, not least because it was at the foot of mount hood, which was just stunning. stunning! between it & mount adams, i felt like i had never seen mountains before. even pikes peak just seems shy by comparison. we also diverted long enough on the way home to drive past horsetail & multnomah falls, which seem worth stopping to see again when there are less tourists. and hey, sunscreen actually prevents sunburn!

then michael & i went to dinner at red star for the lipstick librarian's 45th birthday, where i met a whole passel of other psu librarians.

mission federal credit union "updated" their online banking and as i feared, it no longer works with safari. :( i tried sending them a message with their own message system and got an error: "The Message contains disallowed characters. Please use only letters, numbers and #.,- '&.!%$()?@." -and- they have a tiny window for timeout. argh!

amelia's vet called. we took her in wednesday night for bloodwork and urinalysis, both of which came back clean, which leaves us one other course of action: an endoscopy. in the meantime, we're going to put her on a prescription diet for a couple of weeks.

auggghhh! *looks horrified* from the nytimes:
"Under a system deployed on the White House Web site for the first time last week, those who want to send a message to President Bush must now navigate as many as nine Web pages and fill out a detailed form that starts by asking whether the message sender supports White House policy or differs with it."
besides the obvious usability issues, there's a simply appalling political motivation here.

futon futon futon futon! we have a futon! we also have a whole host of furniture which needs to get the heck out of the living room.

the futon delivery person was an actor who was into alan moore and told me about all the theatres in town and the various organizations to support them. apparently there are two theatres right down the street from us (22nd & raleigh): coho & stark raving. he mentioned pata (the portland area theatre alliance) and theatre vertigo and the callboard tuesday in the oregonian. so thank you, neal starburg! i guess i need to get going on the theatre resume/headshot thing.

also today: i worked a little on updating my general cv so that i can pick bits of it apart to create resumes specific for jobs. whee.

holy cripes! i always wanted to try making that diy ice cream thing with the two ziploc bags, and it turns out it really works! some milk, sugar and ice, and five minutes later (five minutes!) a miracle occurs!

the first batch, following the recipe, actually turned out somewhat bland, so last night i doubled the sugar & vanilla & added a scoop of mexican spiced cocoa, which turned it into something like a chocolate amaretto ice cream, almost too intense to eat. but of course we did. :)

some hints: use a towel to wrap the bags while shaking; it's cold! and the outer bag gets a little leaky toward the end, so be prepared to clean up salt water from the counters & the floor.

update 07.18.03: another important thing: really, only use one cup in the sandwich bag. two cups will make it burst and you'll end up with a large useless bag of salty creamy ice cubes. also, chocolate milk makes the perfect ice cream because it's very tasty and requires absolutely no other mixing or adding or tinkering.

well, that was interesting. i just made the easiest $20 ever by driving a guy to the post office, the library, his barber and then home. trixie may earn her keep yet; craigslist is great!

in other news: finger gash almost closed, though still livid & puffy. still hurts if not careful. bound to another to keep it from moving too much.

my pirate name, according to the "what's my pirate name?" quiz, is...
Mad Grace Rackham:
Every pirate is a little bit crazy. You, though, are more than just a little bit. You have the good fortune of having a good name, since Rackham (pronounced RACKem, not rack-ham) is one of the coolest sounding surnames for a pirate. Arr!

michael is Dirty William Flint.

i managed to slice my left index finger to the bone last night while making chicken tortilla soup. after the copious bleeding and michael's emegency trips for bandaging supplies, i hope it's finally healing, but the wound itself is still an arroyo. strangely, it's not as difficult to type as i thought it would be with just the ring and middle finger of my left hand.

argh. the palm pilot reset itself so i lost everything since i last synced, which would have been earlier this month. but now i can't find the cradle to attach it to tori, despite reshuffling all the boxes in the art room, unpacking a modest few, and peering into every corner.

last night bill, michael & i went to thai orchid and then to pirates of the carribean, which went on a bit too long, but had finely nuanced performances from johnny depp & geoffrey rush (but of course! what did i expect? and yet i did expect less from a movie based on a disneyland ride). now that i see him acting without his long blond wig, orlando bloom has mannerisms that remind me of brian hughes (i wonder what he's doing now?).

chocolate cake in a jar? how cool is that? :D

i was going through the links google's got going on my blogspot pages, and i must say i've been pretty impressed with how much more relevant the ads are now that google ads are being used instead of pyra ads & banners (though there was a dicey time when ads on the main blog were about "shaving" products -ahem-). anyway, a nibbles ad led me to something interesting: did you know the pepsico restaurant chains developed an animal welfare program for their suppliers? that's kind of cool.

[#] [0]
more productive today than usual:
* michael is now insured while driving trixie
* realized i can use paypal to transfer money between my two separate banks (for free! ha!)
* dressed before 4 p.m.
* amelia has a new toy
* the laundry fairy came
* finally figured out how to access my other bank account online (why is it always obscure?)
* found some aaa batteries
what hasn't happened today: grocery shopping, unpacking and a solution for amelia, who decided the hallway would be a good place to leave a "gift" last night. we've now taken to confining her to the art room when we're both gone, but my guess is that i'll have to take her back to the vet.

if you had asked me 5 years ago if i would have ever gone to see an event which included wil wheaton, much less featured him, i would have laughed at you. but it turns out he's become an open source & blogging star and has written a small book of fairly engaging stories, Dancing Barefoot, so michael and i went to see him last night at powell's technical books because he was doing a reading. it was fun! he's a cute geek. :) of course, i had to leave anything resembling money at home because i can't afford powell's until i get a job.

something i didn't expect: michael actually owns a copy of (the artist formerly known as the the artist formerly known as prince)'s emancipation. who would have thought?

other random bits: amelia's done well all day *knock wood*. i think she's glad to be out of confinement. now that i've used it, the immodestly-named "world's best cat litter" may very well be. my charred flesh is healing, though i don't really know what to call this magenta-bordering-on-ultraviolet color. leeann's working on her 26 things. i still have yet to write about the trip to ashland/lincoln/oe, but (here's your teaser) sandy sent along a link about dave willis, who we went horseback rising with. my one goal for the day was to pay bills, and i have yet to do that. tonight michael & i are going to the mission theatre to see x2. i love the mission. :)

update 07.10.03: rob says, "that's about the LEAST likely candidate 4 a 'token' prince album, 2. there's got 2 be a reason." and in fact, there is -- michael says "prince" and kate bush have one collaborative song on that album, which for him is a good enough reason to buy anything.

[#] [0]
i've never seen anyone write: "I want a Mac for my business and I want a PC to play" until now. but in general, yeah, why is this such a religion? sandy is so anti-mac we couldn't even begin to go there.

the first morning with no crap in the art room! hooray! if i wasn't so tired i'd be dancing. i have no idea how michael does this every morning, but it'll take me 5 hours to get to ashland so i need to start at a reasonable (?) hour. :P

speaking of the art room, it's all full of boxes and furniture. so is the rest of the place. now that it's all here, where do i put it? michael & i are still negotiating bookshelf space.

i took amelia to the vet, but he wasn't very helpful: he told me to get a new batch of food, keep her confined, and gave me some flagyl (she soooooooo loves that, and it's such a joy to give it to her) and said if it didn't help in a few days to bring her in again and they'd sedate her for a full examination. on the way to the vet she defecated in the cat carrier, which was a total surprise to everyone, so when the vet first saw her he said, "so how's amelia today? oh, smelly."

bahhh! the movers, of course, call today! they said they'd be here between 3&4 and look, it's after 4 and no word! how surprised am i? (update: they arrive at 4:30) and do i not visit sandy in ashland tomorrow & tuesday? when, o when, will the unpacking occur?

in other news, i randomly discovered i was used as a reference in may for a metablogging question on google answers
"Gretchin lair, the goddess of small things" wraps it up by writing: "I think blogging is a tremendous way for me to organize my brain: it's what high fidelity refers to as 'autobiographical' organization. even if nobody else read it, i'dstill keep a blog."
which is, of course, a reference to "gl.'s 3 rules of blogging (tm)" i wrote in response to rob's "state of the union address on journals."

so now i've been mentioned in the same article as rebecca blood and william gibson! whoo! thanks, rob! you've made me a star! ;)

update 07.09.03: i hope my gentle readers took the last bit in the spirit as it was intended: as i told rob, "i gotta blow my insignificant moments of fame out of proportion or my life seems too pathetic for words. :)"

not much. reading, mostly. michael's going through his books and i want to read some of them before he sells them to powell's (like, say, the complete collection of calvin & hobbes). a little excursion downtown and now we're watching the cartoon channel's justice saturday.

tomorrow amelia has a vet appointment. it turns out she likes the airline kennel and has been in there most of the day.

i was all dazzled by the fireworks and forgot to mention what else happened yesterday: philip stopped by after michael & he were done gaming and brought the schoolhouse rock dvds with him, so we watched the "america rock" segments including the classic "how a bill becomes a law." then we went to pizza oasis and came back to watch 1776, which michael and i saw at the starlight theatre when he was in san diego over the 4th last year (all the actors had to pause as the planes heading to lindbergh field roared overhead). it's such a long movie we had to stop it halfway through to go see the fireworks on the roof (which, as you could probably tell, were lovely despite a large proportion of drunk 20somethings and girls on cell phones) and then come back to finish it.

[#] [0]
i just returned from driving philip home and even driving was magical, because fireworks would burst directly above us, showering us with sparks.

[#] [0]
*eyes shining* how... amazing! we have the best view of fireworks in the whole city -- in the whole state! in all the states i've ever been in! we're 25 stories above anything and can see across the river into washington and all the neighborhoods with their own fireworks shows: parties with roman candles and mortars and bottle rockets and fountains and fireworks which streak and twist like sprites. even now the horizon is still sparkling and flowering and overflowing with colored stars.

mmmmmmmmmm....! i saw the british library's lindisfarne gospel exhibit in person when i was in england and on the web it's pretty darn near the same thing. when i actually saw the lindisfarne gospel itself in ireland a few days later, of course, it was only open to one page and you could only press your face to the glass for so long before someone in the line behind you pushed you forward, so in some ways, this is more satisfying. :)

well, i've done my part for the comic world today! first i dived head-first into scott mccloud's experimental micropayment serial, "the right number." slashdot, unsurprisingly, is feeling cynical about it, but i contributed for the same reason i bought a prius: if nobody buys in, they'll stop doing it. i really still believe that if you make the price point low enough and the entry barrier low enough, most people want to pay, especially if they get to keep the thing they've bought (good for you, scott, encouraging us to download!). i think one of the things that's come of the whole napster collapse is a more conscious awareness of where your money goes after it leaves your hands, and how little actually goes to the artist (whether the art is music, writing, comics, etc.). i agree it would be nice to have a subscription option in addition to the micropayment option, though i probably wouldn't use it myself.

then alex & i went to two comic-based art shows in portland's pearl district during its first thursday openings: pushdot's "the art of storytelling: comics in the digital age" and erik palmer's "BANG COMICS!" alex had to come tonight because pushdot is only open during business hours, which means people with jobs can't go unless they go on first thursday. :P

some quick notes only because after several edits it's now 2:30 and i'm getting a little sleepy:
pushdot:
* inkjet on archival=mostly affordable
* linda medley (castle waiting, which i still can't see without thinking of rob)
* comic bloggers: erika moen; jenn manley lee
* sheldon the pig: no-words style alex & i both liked
* sketchboard

bang comics:
meh. less than a dozen tightly cropped large-scale nude photographs. most interesting was the one which took up a whole wall composed of several overlapping prints, like pixels.

elsewhere:
* hot & packed inside the galleries.
* outside: lots of art, vendors & cobblestones. lots of peoplewatching opportunities between galleries. alex says he didn't realize there were so many "fake people" in portland.
* if bill viola did static stuff, it would be at the gallery with the water images suspended from a hoop, the one which expects you to walk into it and be submerged.
* pepper (?) art: 10 minutes, 10 dollars
* juggling fire!
* alex met someone selling gelato who used to work with him at intel.
* it turns out that 12th & pettigrove is like being in a whole other city, almost like being in pueblo: overgrown fields and crumbling buildings. there was a lovely brewpub with a thick wooden door in a brick building slowly coated in ivy, and with a skeleton bridge also entangled with ivy high overhead.
then when i got home to start to write about all this, alex had left the browser pointing to small stories, so, feeling benevolent (and having not purchased anything from any of the galleries), i contributed some $ via paypal, which michael & i have been recently obsessed with as a way to trade money with each other for bills & such. of course, alex had also been looking at diesel sweeties, penny arcade, ornery boy and nothing nice to say. so why did i pick small stories? i dunno. it's the one i've read the most of, i guess. but it's one of those things that makes me feel bad about donating to one person when there are so many other worthy ones: how do you pick who gets your money?

michael & i scavenged a weird set of shelves from outside the 3rd-floor door: i don't know if we'll keep them, but it's nice, for the moment, to have the phone off the floor and a place to put bills. and the fireworks have already begun! we turned off the lights to watch them: there was a slew to the right of the fremont bridge and further north, perhaps vancouver. i love fireworks. :)

dean sent the izone camera i lost at their place! it was packed ever-so-much-more carefully than i probably would have done, but then, the izone is designed to be fairly indestructible (one of its bonuses). thanks, dean!

i just spent almost 12 hours locked in a room w/ amelia to catch her in the act of defecation, preferably in the litterbox (which actually happened, but not without a fight). there's 12 hours of my life i'll never get back.
update 07.03.03: rob asks, "an amusing vignette. but what are you talking about?" *sighs* read the last paragraph of this entry. amelia is still giving us "gifts" in the morning and this was one of my last desperate ideas to stop it. all for aught, i might add. this morning we got another. this may entail a larger entry when the whole episode is, mercifully, hopefully, over.
