sven wrote me a refrigerator lolpoem in part because i've had a string of recent bike victories lately.
for instance, i just passed 500 miles this year! last year i didn't reach 500 until near the end of november, so this is exciting.
then i made it all the way to new seasons, which has been a goal of mine for a long time. doing our weekly groceries by bike would be a pretty happy place for me, but about half our groceries are liquids (soda, juices, milk, tetra packs, etc.) which are heavy and bulky. they do not fit very well in my bike baskets. so i'm only making "light" trips by bike when we don't have a lot on the list, and am looking forward to getting veggies at the farmer's market in summer again.
but yesterday, during the prettiest day portland has seen yet this year, i made it to oaks park! this has been my goal ever since getting a bike several years ago. i've not realized how close i was previously, so it really feels like i broke a barrier: 18 miles easy roundtrip.
but alas, portland is not always bike paradise. witness this bike rack fail:

i got a lovely email from sandy the other day: it had baby pictures! zachary kevin lay was born march 06. he is adorable and sandy looks -so- happy. i can hardly wait to meet her new family when i visit colorado this year. (um, whenever that might be. it depends on the census, who tells me they'll be hiring in april and people will be working in may.) before her baby had a name she was calling him "button," so i got them a framed quilted piece with a button on it. welcome to the world, zach! may you be blessed with kindness, courage, curiosity and creativity.

i know: i should be writing about the oscars, right? but i keep reading about how lady gaga is so weird- and it makes me laugh because i think lady gaga is the cyndi lauper of our time. remember? she was so unusual!
amanda palmer has a song/video about responses to lady gaga: gagapalmermadonna. i think lauper is a better illustration than madonna, but i can agree with the rest of it:
"...and if someone talented wants to make pop music, why should we worry when there's so much other shit wrong?"
