coming back from safeway on the springwater,  i almost ran into a homeless man sitting right in the middle of the path. in the moonless night he was completely invisible and i worried other people would run into him. i tried to convince him to move to the edge of the path but he refused. i couldn't leave thinking he might get hit, so i stood in front of him with my bike lights to warn passing bikes and talked with him. after about 20mins, he finally agreed to let me escort him to his camp. as soon as he stood up he peed in the middle of the path. he called me his angel.

cashier to daughter: it's better to be a short girl than a tall girl. you wouldn't want to be taller than the boys, would you?

me, hopefully: unless you want to be an amazon.

cashier & daughter: *blank*

cashier: no, you wouldn't want that.

it's too bad the fire alarm went off during laurie anderson's performance tonight, creating an awkward screeching sound during the story about her dog's death.

I saw this in our local Asian mall. I think it's adorable, but I don't know what it has to do with coffee.

I'll love you dear, I'll love you till China and Africa meet
And the river jumps over the mountain
And the salmon sings in the street.
I'll love you till the ocean is folded and hung up to dry,
And the seven stars go squawking
Like geese about in the sky.

trimet is changing the route for the 17, so I took one of the last buses than ran directly from my house to sauvie island for a day of farm frolic and beach splashing.

sauvie island is bigger than i thought. you can't bike (or drive) all the way around the island. instead there's a small inner ring road (12 miles) and three spurs to the north. leira and i explored the eastmost spur that led along the beaches and then, because i missed one of the hourly buses back, i decided to explore a bit of the western spur. there we discovered the wapato state access area, which is a terrible name for a beautiful autumn trail around a marshy lake.

i just barely made it back in time for the last bus before dark. but on the way home i was rewarded with a free bus ride and a huge red moon rising over east portland. the moon was so beautiful and bright i didn't want to stop biking on the springwater corridor trail.

still, sad. i am much less likely to go back to sauvie island if it involves a transfer, especially if i am carrying pumpkins and/or berries.
