packetwarp is down; this is the second major crash in six months. the last "usable" backup is from july. i'm not sure i can live there anymore. is peace of mind and a huge chucnk of my data life worth $20/month? i'm beginning to think so.

i had a hard time sleeping last night, which was oddly punctuated by a car that parked itself outside our house at 2 a.m. while one of its occupants began to breakdance in the street. very surreal. (though doug would not agree.)

hey, ben got a job offer! congratulations, ben!

i've been digging through a collection of files i've had since high school and college. alas, many of the high school ones are in an old desktop publishing program called "ready set go" that i'll probably never be able to access again, which is the horrible part of archiving. say what you will about microsoft, but my word documents still open after 15 years.

after the this is burning man reading a guy i met at burning man and danced with at the lindy hop recognized me (i almost didn't recognize him without the franciscan monk cape and the tall-necked flask w/the glass-eye stopper). i'm not planning on going to the decompression, which is a weekend camping affair and would require me to re-pack everything i've just unpacked. :) especially since the tent is drying on the back porch even as i type.

btw, happy equinox. i've been pretty depressed today for no good reason. but tomorrow morning i'm going to the iprc's letterpress workshop, even though it was, until today, sold out (but i thought to tell them to put me on the waiting list! hooray!). i love letterpress but i've never had the chance to do it.

yesterday sven was very, very sick. nothing but chicken tortilla soup, second-season angel, reading, and lying around on the couch for him -- after the initial intestinal distress and the eventual passing out, anyway. his nose and the bathroom linoleum are well-acquainted, now, though; by the time i heard the thump and got to him blood was just beginning to pool under his nose, and it didn't stop bleeding for quite some time.

alas, carl has been sick, too, so he couldn't come this morning to begin the "writing wednesdays": a long walk on the butte followed by a long unbroken stint of writing. but the fog was very cool this morning! fog where the other side of the street is shrouded and you could find yourself in paris.

and leopoldo's sick, too! this whole sickness thing going around may explain why i've been sleeping so much lately. thank god i'm not at the stage everyone else seems to be, and let's keep hoping i can avoid it. *knocks wood* i keep comparing it to the horrible sickness i had last year, which i never want to see repeated.

what does it say about me that i think the eglu is very, very cool? it's like the imac of chicken-farming. :) if it wasn't a uk thing, i'd have to actually work at not getting one. well, that and the bark dust, i suppose.

i missed "talk like a pirate day" yesterday! meh! for minimal consolation, read what mph calls the "best blog ever," i found some of your life:
"You are unknown to me.
Your camera's memory card was in a taxi; I have it now.
I am going to post one of your pictures each day.
I will also narrate as if I were you.
Maybe you will come here and reclaim this piece of your life."
shiver me timbers.

dahlia at ohm: good show! we had probably the best place to see them as leopoldo's group found a box we could stand on and eventually dance. met mari, travis & camellia. afterwards, i broke up a fistfight near the parking garage: grabbed a guy by the shirt and hauled him off a guy he was punching, stayed between them until they calmed down, still talking tough but moving apart. waited for anyone else to help, though, and only until everything was wildly under control and their friends had moved them down the street did the rentacops drift in. mari called me "supergretchin." came home to two slices of peach pie.

yesterday michaelmas & i went to kay's wedding reception. took the izone, which is great for weddings because you get to leave stickers for them to put in their scrapbooks.

tonight mph & i spent all night trying to get dreamhost to work with ical, which it doesn't want to do because dreamhost changes the permissions of webdav items! grrrrrrrrrrrr!

kay's getting married! this was a shocker when michaelmas told us when we went to see hero on monday. michael & i are going to the reception tomorrow & so i've got some calligraphy work to do.

at the writing group this week (carl came with us this time, too!) joanne said, "you guys are the best!" she goes to another writing group and seems to sincerely appreciate our particular energy & our writing. sven thinks she also appreciates our consistency. it was good to "hear" carl write and there are plans to get him back over to the house to restart the writing routine he & sven had last year.

pix is still great. sven & i went back for the "concoct yo' own dessert night," where you get to choose from a list of ingredient and create something cool. this time we both chose the "black box" competition, in which the ingredients were chosen for us. sven made the "pan-fried sugar oyster" (which has made him want to learn how to brulee), and i made the "port-land butterpuff trio." pix is also making gourmet ice cream now, so we stopped by last night to get cones: port fig & goat cheese for sven, lavendar & candied orange for me.

also last night i saw thx-1138 w/ sven & leopoldo, both of whom had seen it before (i had to ask leopoldo to stop speaking the lines of the movie as they happened). some obvious re-doctoring, slow in the middle, anticlimatic ending, but not bad. i'm a fan of dystopian & cyberpunk movies, even if they're not technically great films. but considering this was lucas' first movie, i'm really impressed. what the heck happened to him?

next thursday is skycaptain and the world of tomorrow! and leopoldo's invited us to the dahlia concert tonight, fitting since he introduced us to vase[s] for xmas.

since mph has moved servers there's some stuff to work out. tweaking we didn't expect.

apparently there was a tear for fears concert in pioneer square and i never even heard about it! argh!

i keep finding myself looking at burning man pictures, hoping to see why i went.

while sweeping the porch this evening i found a large mud daub nestled in the ceiling which had 5 little hollows, each stuffed with dead dessicated spiders. ick!

as some of you are aware, i'm back from burning man. i'm feeling mixed about this trip. if i do a trip report, it certainly won't be like the last one that never got finished. :) btw, dan already has his burning man pix up (we would be the "friendly portland neighbors" as well as the people who got his light-up barbie to twirl).

leopoldo was the first to find us (other than jalex & michaelmas, of course) & invited us to brunch this morning, which we took at zell's. then we went exploring the construction around the "big pipe" sewer project and the ohsu tram construction at the waterfront. then we swung by the armory and mio gelato (cinnamon ice cream!) before heading home to wash & oil the bikes before the playa dust permanently corroded them. trixie also got her back seat replaced, and i did it better this year than i did last year.

of course our grumpy bundle of furry joy is back, too. tonight i gave amelia a little night light, and playing music (especially tanya donnelly) seems to help calm her when she's in the laundry room. i could create a little "goodnight amelia" playlist. or wait! you could! send me a song you think i ought to put on my cat's goodnight playlist. it's so absurd it might just work! :D
