holy cripes! well, i got sendmail to send me several messages locally and at csusm (it's also generating a bazillion messages a second in the mail.log file from delayed system reports it's so happy to finally be sending somewhere other than /dev/null). and better yet, yes, it does work with the standard php mail function! yay! *dances*
the best instructions i found were on a page called "Receiving Daily System Reports in MacOS X," though i found i kept having to add "sudo" to many of the commands and replace
m4 ../m4/cf.m4 osx.mc > /tmp/sendmail.cf
with
gm4 ../m4/cf.m4 osx.mc > /tmp/sendmail.cf
plus, i'll be using pine to access local mail instead of setting up an imap server. or i could learn how to use *gasp* mail!
