gretchin lair: strange and charmed

heh, heh, heh . . . I too, have played a fairy -- the zucchini fairy to be exact. our zucchinis in colorado springs were so prolific that the neighbors would see us coming with a bag and they were refuse to answer the door! (we used to joke that we should get one of those farm subsidies they pay to NOT grow a particular crop -- pay us, please, not to grow zucchini.)

now a raspberry fairy -- that would be welcome at any time!

i only planted -1- zucchini. i don't even necessarily like zucchini, but i wanted to see what all the fuss was about, and i thought 1 plant might be manageable. can you pick the blossoms w/o destroying the fruit?

You could use the blossoms to make fried squash blossums or put the blossums in a soup. If the whole blossum is picked that would be one less zucchini that develops on the vine.

the plan was to eat the blossoms, yes: i just wasn't sure if i was deleting a zucchini by doing so (population management! ;), or if at that point the zucchini was already established.

heck, i just read "Squash grow rapidly; especially in hot weather and are usually ready to pick within 4 to 8 days after flowering." holy cow! maybe i'll be zucchini fairy sooner than i thought.

When I was a kid, we had a couple zucchini plants in the back yard. Each day during the summer, we'd go out & check them, and there'd be another zucchini ready to pick, one that hadn't been there the day before. Be prepared to give away or compost a lot of squash.

i gotta figure out recipes for all these zucchini. i tried dipping them in chocolate, but was underhwlemed. i'm going to try them in a teriyaki chicken this week and see if that helps.

I work in the same dept. as the physicist/cosmologist Steven Weinberg, and somewhere around here is his recipe for "anhydrous zucchini" -- which is essentially zucchini slowly sauted in just a teeny bit of olive oil and no water. But ah, he writes it up much more elegantly.

Chocolate & zucchini never really did it for me -- not as chocolate brownies and I can't imagine them dipped in chocolate. Um, I'd just lick the chocolate off, thank you.
