Oh, crap!
Yes, there's disk recovery stuff you can use. The all-time champion is DiskWarrior. I had a hardware failure and DiskWarrior did not recover my lost data, while it was able to repair the drive; but you have not had a hardware failure, and I am confident it would recover your data without trouble. It isn't cheap but it is available as a download, and they'll send the physical disk in the mail later, so you can recover now. It's what I'd use in your situation, and I'd do it as quick as I could, to avoid writing over any of the data and screwing up the file structure before you can recover it. Good luck!
Sadly, I don't think there's a free or cheap solution here. But do ask mph, who knows more about this sort of thing than I do.
i don't see anything free. this article is from Nov 03. this is right after the firewire 922 fiaso and there's no mention of free utilities then either.

alas, disk warrior was a wasted purchase: if your directory isn't damaged, it won't find files for you.

so i had to buy file salavage, too. ouch. it looks like it's working, but i haven't been back to the studio yet to see how well, or see how itunes handles re-importing them. |
