michaelmas & i went to see helvetica at the hollywood last night. there was an incredibly long line for a film about a typeface. the theatre was pretty packed, too: at least 300 people, i think. i had no idea there were so many type geeks in portland. :) it actually made me want to create something in helvetica; it's not a font i tend to use much because i'm such a fan of serifs.

something interesting from the sky this week:

Our rapidly lengthening nights now allow us to enjoy long evening walks in the mild air, and as the sunset hour approaches you can try your luck at spotting the bright planet Venus high in the west as Old Sol dips toward the horizon. This year gives us one of the best evening apparitions of the dazzling planet. These favorable circumstances repeat at eight-year intervals, so try to take full advantage of this one. If you can hide the Sun behind a tree or building before he sets, try finding Venus by “stacking” your clenched fists held at arms’ length. Venus will be about four fist-widths up from the Sun, and if you can’t spot her in daylight she should pop into view almost immediately after sunset. This week she moves between the stars Al-Nath and Zeta Tauri, which mark the tips of the horns of Taurus, the Bull.

i think it's saying you can conceivably see venus in the daytime! how cool is that?

and better news for mexico city, who just legalized early-term abortions for the first time ever. 46-19, even!

"pro-life" should be happy that this will dramatically reduce the amount of women who kill themselves by swallowing glass or poison to attempt a miscarriage. i haven't figured out how to respectfully talk about my patients yet, but one of them was an older spanish-speaking woman from mexico who still has 5 children there. she didn't want to have another child at this point in her life and she was very grateful she had the right to decide that here.

i had to go back to bed after discovering the supreme court upheld congress' ban against late-term abortions with no exception for the health of the mother. late-term abortions are less than 1.5% of all abortions and they're -not- invoked lightly (but then, no abortion is).

but bush is pleased: "Today's decision affirms that the Constitution does not stand in the way of the people's representatives enacting laws reflecting the compassion and humanity of America."

the CONSTITUTION DOESN'T STAND IN THE WAY of making laws? dude, that's what it's SUPPOSED to do! if it's not in your way, you're doing it WRONG.

we've got a house guest for a while:



this is nina, who is one of "upstairs jennifer"'s cats. i used to take care of nina & chata in san diego when jennifer was away. but now jennifer (and her son evan) has moved to portland! since she's currently living w/ her sister, she placed the cats with foster homes. nina wasn't doing well, though, so jennifer thought nina would like it here better, since there's less noise and no competition from other cats.

well, i certainly hope that's true! though nina has already found herself a place to hide, wedged in amongst the reams of paper we have at the top of the stairs.

i really must becoming a portlander: when it began to rain while i was at the portland nursery with neither a hood nor an umbrella, i thought, "eh." today i came home with blueberries, grapes, roses, lavendar, lilacs, catnip for arwen, buttercrunch, cilantro, jasmine and lilacs (which always remind me of my great-grandmother).

i got my first spam twitter friend today, one that wants me to care about the weather. i can only imagine where it might go from here.

8:00 PM: the garden of earthly delights [#] [1]

thus begins the season of gushing garden stories. :)

today i transplanted the sage, thyme, mints & garlic chives to the sunnier location where the rosemary has been thriving; it's starting to become a proper herb garden. i turned over the soil in the garden box where they used to live and tucked in three rows of lettuces (arugula, red romaine, and... something). then i mulched everyone with leftover grass clippings from the last time we mowed the lawn. it looks like the nights will get cold this week and i hope that keeps them a little warmer.

i also added compost to the soil around the herbs & before i overturned the garden box. i still can't believe we throw all this weird stuff in it and out comes soil!
