That looks gorgeous, and Nicole Kidman as Coulter is an inspired bit of casting.
I do wonder how faithful the movies will be to the books. I think the only reasons the fundies never raised a storm of controversy about the "blasphemous" nature of His Dark Materials is that A) The books were never popular enough to come to their attention and B) You actually need to pay attention to what you're reading in order to get the ideas & themes that Pullman puts in the books. I'm afraid the movies will back away from the books' anti-authoritarian and anti-church message, undercutting the whole point of the story. If they don't, get ready for a hell of a controversy.
philip, that's one of the things i'm worried about, too. i always wondered why there wasn't much protest about its atheism & magic! and because it seemed like it had flown under the radar, i was surprised when they decided to make a movie out of it.

certainly i think the golden compass is the most accessible of the three books. if they continue with the series, they're much more likely to mess it up (both the relationship between lyra & will and the antichurch/authority messages). i'm still hoping it doesn't turn out like narnia, star wars, lord of the rings, or a series of unfortunate events. i wonder if "a wrinkle in time" will become a movie at some point. |
