during a break in the rain tonight sven & i walked to powell butte and saw something glowing under a tree: two little dots of light as clear as an led flashlight or a firefly, but it wasn't moving. sven picked it up and carried it to where there was some light, where we discovered it was a bug with bioluminescent dots on its tail! it looked like a millipede with fewer legs. i didn't know we had bioluminescent bugs in oregon!

busy weekend:

* sven & i went to see bodyworlds at omsi. fascinating, but some political choices that made me angry, primarily about the role of the church in the history of science. but it was interesting to see his style progress from standard anataomical reference and historical references to deliberate artistic choices and the use of new materials. unlike some exhibits, i totally feel i got my $15 worth.

* hosted an improv workshop at the studio.

* met w/ michaelmas, kristen & todd to see the swifts swarm at chapman elementary. kristen and todd are going to italy next week, and will be in the EU at the same time i am. i leave oct03 to see the completion of expedition360, which i've been involved with for over eight years.



* went on a long walk on powell butte to celebrate the autumn equinox, where i found my favorite spot (in the orchard) and the -best- climbing tree i've ever met.

artist's way starts tomorrow morning. i had a large response for tuesday morning, and only one request for monday night, so i'm taking a writing class starting tonight instead.

in contrast to the last post, this video of the san diego mayor abruptly deciding to support gay marriages (vs vetoing them, as he was expected to), made me actually cry with relief and delight. i admire the courage it must take to reverse yourself so publically and emotionally. it's totally worth watching. multiple times.

10:40 PM: portland's living room [#] [0]

sven & i went to the living room theaters to watch paprika today. when we came out, we talked more about the theatre than the movie! its luxury lies in the very small theatres with loungeworthy seats and decadent food options like duck confit crepes & iced chai you can munch on while watching the movie (if you must have popcorn, it is apparently "made to order"). the sinks in the bathrooms are extremely unusual and practically profligate.

when i opened up my catalog for aocc an unexpected surprise dropped out: an arizona driver's license!


that's just a sample because i can't really put it online. i wonder how the heck it got in my aocc catalog? i'll put the original card in the mail tomorrow.

you know you're up early when restauraunts aren't open for breakfast yet. the portland society for calligraphy was asked to volunteer to write numbers on the arms & legs of the portland triathlon participants this morning, which meant i got up at 4:30 a.m. orion was still lingering over the hawthorne bridge and venus has fully transitioned to being a morning star, bright and fierce during sunrise.

this is portland's first triathlon so i think we helped make it even more special. many triathletes said they were really grateful to have beautiful numbers to wear for the next few days: the number they wear is like a badge of honor, but usually they get something scrawled with a sharpie. even the athletes who were wearing full-length body suits wanted numbers!

i was seduced by the promise of the aurigids last night, a potential "meteor storm" at 4:30 a.m.:

"The source of the putative shower is Comet Kiess (C/1911 N1), a mysterious "long-period comet" that has visited the inner solar system only twice in the past two thousand years. In 83 BC, give or take a few centuries, Comet Kiess swung by the sun and laid down a trail of dusty debris that has been drifting toward Earth's orbit ever since. On Sept. 1, 2007, the dusty trail and Earth will meet."

so it sounded very dramatic: we've only seen the comet once every 1000 years and they were predicting >100 meteors an hour. but we only saw three shooting stars, so in retrospect sleeping might have been a better use of time. otoh, the "winter hexagon" was crisp and large last night, with orion standing firmly above the butte and the scarlet star of mars high in the horns of taurus.

but we discovered today that toby was missing. we took him to the field with us last night to watch the stars. we called and called but he didn't respond, so we traced our route back to the field. i was so happy when i saw him lying on the ground next to the gate. we brushed him off, brought him home, and listened to him talk about his "adventure" before letting him take a nap.

i'm glad we have such small dramas.
