you know you're up early when restauraunts aren't open for breakfast yet. the portland society for calligraphy was asked to volunteer to write numbers on the arms & legs of the portland triathlon participants this morning, which meant i got up at 4:30 a.m. orion was still lingering over the hawthorne bridge and venus has fully transitioned to being a morning star, bright and fierce during sunrise.
this is portland's first triathlon so i think we helped make it even more special. many triathletes said they were really grateful to have beautiful numbers to wear for the next few days: the number they wear is like a badge of honor, but usually they get something scrawled with a sharpie. even the athletes who were wearing full-length body suits wanted numbers!
