3:38 PM: attend the tale of sweeney todd [#] [14]
sven & i went to see sweeney todd last night. i tried to find a place that had meat pies for dinner, but i settled for a sausage calzone at oasis. i'd never seen it before but my dad was sweeney todd in college so i'd always been interested. sven's interested in seeing the angela lansbury version now. and of course johnny depp has a version, too, but i'm a little more cautious now that he's done a terrible remake of willy wonka.

Ah, I remember Kevin in Sweeney Todd! And around that time we drove up to Manitou with David Orahood & Annette Whaley to see the production of it at the Iron Springs Chateau. Haven't thought about that in ages. Have you ever gone to the Iron Springs Chateau?

i went to the iron springs chateau once when an xbf used to work there. it was a christmas olio of sorts rather than a true play, but it was fun.

saw sweeney todd. couldn't really make out what they were signing. everyone else agreed it wasn't the best presentation. i'll have to watch the movie now.

Do try to track down the Angela Lansbury version. It's fantastic (the Johnny Depp one, not so much).

@alex: i didn't know you were the play-going sort! the horse brass looks perfect for what i wanted (though the oasis calzone was mighty tasty).

@philip: hmmm, we were planning on watching the johnny depp one on friday. oh, tim burton, why hast thou deserted me?

I'm not sure I'd say the Johnny Depp version is bad, exactly. It just suffers in comparison to the Angela Lansbury one. At least it does for me.

A large part of my problem with the JD version is that Helena Bonham Carter plays Mrs. Lovett all wispy & ethereal. I don't think her voice is strong enough to carry the role.

(I feel I should mention that I liked the JD Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. It's very different from the Gene Wilder version, but I still like it.)

ah, darn. yeah, i was actually appalled at the chocolate factory remake, but i usually am about stories that blame weirdness or murder on a character's childhood.

well, that was the first musical i've been to. didn't see what the singing added to the experience (and actually, i thought it detracted)

Oh, don't fear the Johnny Deep Sweeney Todd, it is so beautifully goth. The visuals were amazing. It was almost as fun as a Buffy sing-along.

@leeann: yeah, we saw it and i did like the look of it -- and johnny depp was good (thank goodness!). but i agree w/ phllip that helena bonham carter wasn't strong enough.
