blending august and september events. had to make the most of summer while i had it. now that it's raining again, i can write about it.
birthday: the big event of august was my birthday, which really sort of began in july with the visit from sven's parents. to celebrate my 37th year i biked the length of se37th ave, from where it begins at the springwater corridor trail to where it ends at ne liberty. how poetic! i did have to make some creative loops in places where 37th doesn't exist. i stopped halfway to drink some cold water at castle5000 who lives along 37th, then i met sven afterwards at fernhill park which lies along 37th for cake, though by that point it was getting pretty dark. we finished with a late night snack at mcmenamin's kennedy school just a couple of blocks away, where i won a game of pool. to finish this year's birthdaypalooza, i invited friends to tony starlight's (at the corner of ne37th and sandy!) for a louis armstrong birthday tribute concert featuring the trumpeter from pink martini (louie armstrong was born on aug04, too!). i had a great time, even if i did have to wake at 5:30 the next morning. :)

other events: alex & amelia’s block party, lots of farmer’s markets, art in the pearl, 10 tiny dances (met mike barber at our pre-show meal at the observatory!), anniversary. we also took bridget to lunch at flying pie & bipartisan cafe during talk like a pirate day: she totally dressed up! white bird season has begun: we saw BJM Danse Montréal at the newmark theatre. we celebrated michaelmas in a mild way. our house was egged twice. we got to go to diamond again to watch the full moon rise on the alvord desert behind the steens mountains. it was a bit of a mixed trip: i really enjoyed exploring the land and the actual moonrise, though.

rosebike: i passed 2000 miles in august! i got a bike trailer for my birthday, so i've been getting groceries by bike weekly. yes! but the highlight of the summer was packing up the bike trailer and heading out to camp by myself at oxbow park! i haven't been camping in years and have never camped by myself -- and certainly never camped by bike! but it was a lot of fun, and the staff there is incredibly helpful and friendly. the trip was full of excitement: as i was riding down the giant hill to enter the park, my bike trailer separated from the bike and began to race down the hill in front of me. thanks to a ninja move i was able to wrestle it against the guardrail -- not OVER the guardrail -- and rescue everything without sprawling it all in front of traffic. the staff was impressed enough at the story that they volunteered to give me a ride up to the top of the hill the next day, which i gratefully accepted. but bridgepedal was in august, too! this is the first time i've biked there, done the ride, and biked home. i managed it on one charge: 40 miles! that's the longest ride i've ever done on one charge. the route wasn't as good this year because so many bridges were closed, but i still had a good time. august & sept also featured the se & nw sunday parkways: one of them was SUPER HOT; the other was very rainy. i also attended the intertwine park(ing) bike tour. ended up replacing rose's back tire after days of wondering why it would go flat.

jobs: i started working for uws, doing things similar to my ohsu gigs. i can even easily bike there! i also had a few ohsu shifts: it looks like this standardized patient stuff is starting to become a decent source of income. to top it off, i'm doing some regular webwork for the the ebike store: what a perfect fit!
seasonal: blackberries, the night insect frog trilling, equinox walk delayed due to the alvord trip. also, carl invited me to see the perseids but we just couldn't make it work, so i hung out in the field for a couple of hours and saw a few good ones.
media: my so-called life, alias w/ michaelmas, max headroom (still enjoyable!), book of kells movie w/ kristen, todd & sven
other: michaelmas got a prettypretty doctor who art piece framed so i was called upon to help rearrange his art; my dad sent sorta good news about his health: no visible cancer on rescan, but still on chemo for 3 more months.
Comments:
Congrats on the bike adventure. Some beautiful photos, too--especially the desert pictures.
