in case you hadn't noticed, cheeseburger's back. hooray!

also, i'm growing tomatoes the size of baby heads.

also, i'm sick.

but that's not keeping me from volunteering for planned parenthood at the state fair today. i'll ask people to sign the "freedom of choice act," beg them to vote no on 43, and give them what i've got. i'm nothing if not generous.

good news: the fda finally approved plan b to be sold over the counter!

bad news: only for women 18 and older, which means this is literally over the counter and you have to ask a pharmacist for it.

worse news: some pharmacists are still refusing to sell birth control, including plan b, and some corporations (notably walgreens & target) are legitimizing that. so are many states. illinois is the only state that specifically requires a pharmacist dispense any legally prescribed/sold medication, and even has signs up telling women who to call if their pharmacist refuses.

we're back from canada, and like the last post, it's likely to be a run-on sentence in no particular order, but this time with a picture:

sven wanted to show me kim graham's studio in georgetown but she wasn't there; the canadians were quite dubious about trixie, though edmonton was a little more receptive; sven never got to go to the thing he was most looking forward to -- the royal tyrell museum -- because he was on what we call the "drumheller diet" which is very similar to a horrible sickness i had when i first moved to portland; we ate a LOT on this trip and i tried to chicken feet at dim sum, but it turns out my cholsterol levels dropped enough despite all that to surprise everyone at my doctor's office, though i still have issues with triglycerides & i'll be on lipitor for a few more months; there was a labyrinth in a neighbor's yard; we watched the perseids from the world's smallest state park until the moon washed out the sky; as we arrived at the dalles we fell right into neon nights, a customized car parade, and trixie almost fit in, which was good because it took forever to get down the 6 streets that make up downtown; waterslide!; we might possibly have seen the northern lights, but maybe they were clouds; we made a diversion to kelowna and okanagan university, somewhere i went to for a week when i was working for webct; we walked down a railroad track to skip stones across a sandy river; i freaked out a little in the mountains during a rainstorm with huge semis barelling down on me but i felt better after i put earplugs in; saskatoon berry and nanaimo ice cream; we should have stayed at the "disneyland" castle/hotel in banff rather than the cabin with two broken lights, no hot water and the key broken off in the lock; ravens are BIG and i now understand why they're so prominent in nw native legends; edmonton has an unusually large number of pyramids; excellent scrabble game & tea shop; the swing of the century, carousels & a virtual fighting game at the west edmonton mall; homemade chocolate chip cookies for breakfast almost every day; wild turkeys and a rocky mountain bighorn sheep escaping the hordes of tourist cameras; a still & quiet lake w/ a shouting boat on the other side; vulcan is pretty boring; boy, we took a lot of pictures i'm still sifting through; i finally replaced the dsl modem and our network is working again.

also worth noting is that we stayed with the incredibly wonderful schewger-bell family on this trip:

thanks, culley, steve, salix, linnea, violet & paisley! they were great hosts, kind enough to make great breakfasts for us when we finally made it upstairs, including a stack of orange chocolate-chip pancakes with a candle on my birthday. did i mention it was my birthday? well, it was. happy 33 to me!
