i'm addicted to twitter. i have always loved to see the shape of days via mundane details. (and as shakespeare said, "Do you not know that I am a woman? When I think, I must speak.”)

blogger finally forced the issue and converted all my "old blogs" to the "new blogger." sigh. the dashboard is better, but i can't turn off the labels, which i don't plan on using in part because i have over 3 years of back-labeling to do if i do.

also, it's now forcing me to use my google account, which i was using in another profile to comment on blogs without linking to this one. i tried getting a new google account a while ago but didn't have any luck finding a name that wasn't already taken.

My Peculiar Aristocratic Title is:
Her Most Noble Lady Gretchin the Weird of Helions Bumpstead
Get your Peculiar Aristocratic Title

update: mph has a smashingly good title, as does sven, who is "Reverend Lord Sven Bonnichsen the Bloody of New Scagglethorpe." todd is "Reverend Lord Todd the Charitable of Lower Hellswicke" and kristen is "Lady Kristen Dedeaux the Indecisive of Old Tonbridge Wafers."

i can't believe it! two good movies in a month! after seeing children of men last week, we got to see pan's labyrinth at cinema 21 tonight. it was emotionally gripping, both beautiful & brutal. fantasy is always born from reality.

something wonderful happened to me last night:

i'm cheating a little: the first folder ("00") has about 30 messages in it from as far back as september 2005 that i intend to respond to, but this means that i'm essentially caught up. i lost a lot of ground in october and started to focus on just responding to one day's worth of mail at a time to stay sane.

i suspect being sick & cancelling all my appointments had something to do with this. :) but the todo list is starting to get smaller instead of larger, too. today i even had time and the mental freedom to go for a walk! i feel like i'm living the gtd dream. ;)

it also made it easier to notice this morning that out of 53 messages i received when i woke up, only 18 of them were actually for me. *sigh*

is it an oxymoron to type a blog entry about national handwriting day?

Blog for Choice Day - January 22, 2007

happy roe day! or, as it's also known, "national sanctity of human life day." gah.

why am i pro-choice? there are lots of reasons:

* because birthdays are my favorite holidays.

* because we're all still waiting for birdie to be born and ben's birthday is coming up and jalex & mockula really want children.

* because i care about the lives of the people who are already living.

* because i am empathetic and compassionate.

* because i want all births to be wanted births.

* because i don't romanticize the past.

* because abortion is such a small part of the total picture.

* because pregnancy is hard enough without it becoming a battleground.

* because i've had an abortion, and i want everyone else to have the same choice.

it's that last one that's hardest to type. but ultimately, as it is for every woman who has a choice, that's the one that matters most.

i volunteered for ppcw's annual roe vs wade luncheon yesterday because it featured sarah stoesz, the head of planned parenthood in south dakota (& north dakota and minnesota). she famously proclaimed "these doors will stay open!" when south dakota passed a law banning all abortions in the state. that law was fortunately overturned by a ballot initiative, and she was going to speak about that struggle. i was hoping for a speech that would bring tears to my eyes, one that confirmed my solidarity with other abortion activists. what i got was a speech about building bridges and speaking in a language that red america can hear. but i haven't actually seen any evidence that that's true, and i haven't seen anything which offers hope that south dakota won't just turn around and ban abortion except for rape & incest. in fact, other states are trying the same original tactic south dakota tried. so how did we defeat the ban in south dakota? i still have no idea.

in better news, ppcw is now offering the hpv vaccine! and even better than that, it was added to the list of immunizations covered under oregon's vaccines for children program, they can provide the vaccine for free to patients under 18. (without parental consent, thank you very much!) and they're in the process of building another health center on mlk.

i volunteered to help at the table with the name tags on it. it was fairly uneventful, though i was surprised to discover that some naral members apparently have a grudge against ppcw. someone harassed me for seating naral so far back. "the day planned parenthood puts naral up front is the day i roll over," she said after i helped her find her organization's table on the seating chart. i tried to laugh it off: "if i had been in charge, i would have put you front & center," but she wouldn't let it go. "planned parenthood has never appreciated naral." and later, "without us you would have never defeated measure 43." she obviously wanted me to apologize, but what could i say? only later did i discover that the planned parenthood seated its employees & volunteers at even worse tables, so i really don't know what she had to complain about.

but bonus: on the dessert plates were chocolates in the shape of pill packs. tee hee!

kyrie tagged me while waiting for birdie to be born, so here are 6 weird things about me:
1. until i was 10 or so, i used to drink worcestershire sauce & italian dressing straight. (but not mixed! ew!)

2. when i'm parallel parking, i almost always have to turn off all noise: the heater, the radio, etc. i certainly can't talk while i'm parking.

3. i've only been even vaguely drunk once.

4. i've been keeping track of everything i've eaten for years. some months are better than others. :)

5. when i worked at csusm i was so depressed i would keep myself from going to sleep because i would just have to wake up again in the morning.

6. i've passed out twice while having my blood drawn, and once just at the threat of a pinprick. but i'm fascinated to see anyone else's blood or bodily processes.
now, i tag dang, alesia, shelley & cheeseburger brown. go!

i ate the package in the cupboard to spare sven the horror.

3 snowfalls in one winter! yes! tonight the sky is clear and cold, the stars bursting & crystalline.

last night trixie had trouble getting home: there was someone walking in the middle of the road so i couldn't get enough speed to get up our icy hill. i ended up sliding backwards until one of the wheels got stuck off the road, at which point i could reverse, get my head facing the road, and slowly inch back down it. then i went the long way 'round, via ellis.

pation.

finally, the iphone is here! well, it'll be here in june, anyway. fortunately, i have a long-standing policy of not being a macproduct guinea pig, waiting until the next version comes out. but the widgets make SO much more sense now. and i'm amazed to see interface elements directly from the "Multi-Touch Interaction Research" i saw earlier this year (especially maps & pix).

my main concerns:
* it is a LOT of money. and i am still afraid of the cingular pricing plans on top of it.
* do you sync via bluetooth, or does syncing happen through cingular (one of the things about carriers that drives me nuts)
* will the calendar sync work? it -never- worked on my nano, which i half of why i bought the nano.

update: it occured to me while watching the keynote: if it uses wifi instead of cingular's network whenever possible, it is a brilliant pairing with metro wifi initiatives.

since being bought by starbucks, coffee people locations have slowly been winking out of existence. now the only ones left are on stark and mlk. the mlk one doesn't even have ice cream anymore, which distressed us because sven and i have been trying to buy as many "fabulous coffee screamer" shakes as often as humanly possible.

the last one will close saturday, jan11. coffee people was one of the first places i was introduced to in portland (hi, markalope!). i'll miss them when they're gone.

happy new year! because pastaworks didn't carry the tiny bottles of champagne they carried last year, we climbed up the hill to watch the city sparkle with fireworks and shared a small bottle of ginger beer. the neighbors there counted down and banged on pots & pans for a full minute.

i stayed up till sunrise again: i like to see the first dawn of the new year. it's poetry to struggle through the darkness into the light. it's a ritual i've had since pueblo, even though it's a lot easier to do now that i have internet access and a million todo items to wrap up.

in fact, i've just discovered it's a good time to spend some of the pre-dawn hours tying up loose ends from the previous year: label photos, clear out old bills from the files, balance and start a new financial spreadsheet, figure out reoccurring tasks & holidays. this is stuff i do anyway, but spread out over the week. it's nice to already have that time "built in" as part of the ritual, so i really do start off fresh.

balancing my financial spreadsheet is where i discovered i was missing four checks; apparently i had put them in an envelope which got recycled along with the christmas envelopes. eeep! thank goodness recycling was delayed a day, and thank goodness i was desperate enough that i thought to look there. it's a much better new year now, thank you. :)
