the friday five is up.
When was the last time you...

1. ...sent a handwritten letter?
christmas.

2. ...baked something from scratch or made something by hand?
baked something from scratch? ha ha ha ha ha! i can actually make baked alaska but you'd better believe that the angelfood comes from a box. make something by hand? probably the bricks i made for edna's birthday.

3. ...camped in a tent?
tricky because both times i've been camping here it hasn't been with a tent -- it's been too warm and the point was to see the stars. if a tent is a requirement, then probably not since i worked for the renaissance fair almost 10 years ago.

4. ...volunteered your time to church, school, or community?
well, it's not like i get paid for bring membership chair for the san diego fellow calligraphers.

5. ...helped a stranger?
i pointed out a sign to someone at ikea today. i helped a lost-looking girl out of the craven hall maze yesterday.
ikea was out of the one thing i wanted. came back slowly through traffic. nothing else to do now but clean. i don't know what to get for brian&terrilynn tomorrow.

i just ripped my heart out & gave it to garrett, who is now oh-so-graciously handling therese baker's course.

this would be funny if it weren't happening to me: after fixing one major issue with therese baker's salons, it turns out she had another drastically seriously problem i never would have thought to check for! it's a stunningly horrible and unfortunate event, and it would have to happen to her. i just can't even believe it. i would like to skip right past all the pain sure to ensue and jump right to the part where we all can laugh about it. but i am doubtful of this occuring, so i bcc:ed chuck on all correspondence.

but even before that, the educ501 clan decided to open another section, and they removed students from other courses before the new section was created! so for a day, several students were in limbo & called to ask the helpdesk, who had no idea why they could access their course yesterday, but not today.

thursby finally admitted dave handles the "everyone" user incorrectly: "This does appear to be a bug, I have reported this to engineering, for the moment your workaround is to list the users individually. I apologize for the inconvenience."

which is validating and all, but it would have been nice for it to work. listing all the users really isn't a good option for this particular share, as it's a share i use when i'm at someone else's machine, usually a faculty member. i wouldn't know all the users. plus, it's the mp3 share; i let anyone add stuff. :)

in my determination not to check my mail this weekend, i forgot about this week's friday five:
1. Do you live in a house, an apartment or a condo?
apartment.
2. Do you rent or own?
can you own an apartment?
3. Does anyone else live with you?
i fit the single-girl stereotype: one cat lives with me.
4. How many times have you moved in your life?
i don't know if i can count that high: 15?
5. What are your plans for this weekend?
detoxifying from last week. michael thought i should go -- somewhere, anywhere -- and look at the stars, but it turned out i felt better staying at home & being domestic.

bowling alone, while a little thick, demonstrates something i used to try to discuss with jacob waaaay back in 1995/96: that the internet will really become indespensible when it becomes more responsive to local community.

cindy's back! and she's got pictures, though ofoto is giving me fits.

but now i understand why someone from phogenix was looking at nefarious. :)

bills are done. that's nice.

i finally went through the last two bags of stuff from my parent's house. one of the bags was a bunch of papers i saved from as far back as junior high; i need to find a box to put them in so i can finally bring them inside.

the other bag had a few more novels & textbooks, but it was mostly scripts and scripts and more scripts -- some of plays i don't even remember being in! reading through some of them, it was amazing that as i followed along i could actually remember the tone & cadence of the lines as i spoke them (especially true in the importance of being earnest & as you like it, i think because of the accent). i still don't have a good place for my drama & poetry stuff, so now that i've sorted through everything, i don't know where to put it.

i just saw a lilo & stitch commercial which parodied the lion king. bwah! i have to go see it now. :)

i bought more plants yesterday! another type of lavender, another type of jasmine, some basil, an orange lantana, an oleander, and a scarlet verbena.

i also replaced the non-descript ikea drawer handles with swirly, more-like-me-type handles. i'm still planning on finishing painting w/ the magnetic paint, but i finally think that the cable-hanging thing i saw at ikea a few weeks ago is really what i want to do. i'm just not looking forward to going down there (especially on a weekend). so maybe next friday. too bad their website sucks.

i watched almost famous last night, which was pleasant enough. all the actors gave excellent, empathetic performances, and i absolutely melted over patrick fugit. the story was unusual and even interesting, but it was missing something.

i've been reading reviews about lilo & stitch because i've been intrigued by the trailers and i want to see if i really should bother seeing it while michael is here. and i must say, even the bad reviews don't make me not want to see it, mostly because the bad reviews are lamenting the supposed loss of qualities i disliked during the "golden age" of disney animation, films centered on dumb songs where the goal of the cute petite women was to find someone to marry.

i've been much more able to identify with the "recent" disney pictures, like mulan, atlantis, and even the emperor's new clothes. these are films where the central conflict is solved by the main character(s) and not by the cute sidekicks, and the focus is not on a romantic relationship. so i'm still hopeful. i mean, i don't think i'll absolutely adore it (sounds like it has too much elvis for me), but i think i'll enjoy it. and lilo reminds me of the girls in lunch money. :)

this is one of those days where i wish i drank. heavily. we had the big bad meeting w/ therese baker & it was not pretty. after an hour it got somewhat better, but it was still something i would have preferred not to have had to do. i feel drained and am wondering if i really want to be an academic technology person.

[#] [0]
i'm getting a lot of these weird errors in the console today:
"Jun 19 14:27:33 nefarious /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemUIServer.app/Contents/MacOS/SystemUIServer: kCGErrorIllegalArgument : CGSGetWindowGeometry: Invalid window"

what's that about?

[#] [0]
today is adra's birthday! we're taking her to lunch at buena creek nursery. :)

and then i come back probably to deal with therese baker.

in tech news: i still can't get dave to recognize the "everyone" user, which means the_masses share is useless. (it recognizes me & my share fine). for some reason, it's also not recognizing figbash -- i think because it's also an everyone share. argh!

more good news: i told nancy i got my (useless) affirmative action letter from psu last night .*sigh* she wrote:
I was going to email you this evening...you must have ESP. Again, you didn't hear this from me, but, we just today made an offer to a person with a MS in computer science and PhD in Ed Psych. IF you had only had an MS! Your name came up a number of time with this very sentiment mentioned everytime. You really were very very well qualified for this job, with the exception of the degree. I am truly sorry this didn't work out. I think you would have done a great job and you would have like Portland.
so this leaves me w/ a choice i would have preferred not to make: do i get a master's just to get a credential, or do i get a master's to try to learn more than i already know? the decision will influence what program i pick.

[#] [0]
teresa nixed chuck's draft of the letter to therese baker, saying she thought it might do more harm than good. chuck just got back from somewhere & arrived to the flood of soc311tb mail. after reading it all, he wrote:
Teresa,

For the first time in my career here, I am not sure that I will be able to deal effectively with a customer. This person is beyond belief.

I believe that I will request that Norm be there. Thank you for the suggestion.
and i don't mind talking to her, but i didn't want to go by myself.

[#] [0]
hey, i finally signed up for a commenting service, in case anyone is actually reading this. :)

[#] [0]
the therese baker situation isn't getting any better. fortunately, chuck is drafting a message to her and is defending my actions.

most recently, students were calling about not having access to the "papers" section of the course; there was nothing indicating students should not have access to the link (like, "available july 3" or "no access yet"). i emailed her about what i should do but got no response, so i asked chuck what should be done and he told me to post the link. in response, she wrote:
The students do not decide when things should be done in this course, I decide. You are a staff member who is supposed to be assisting me not ignoring my e-mails and making decisions about my course. Now twice you have made serious errors in setting up this course: this past one is really beyond belief. You are not the decision-maker about what gets posted and when. And you have no authority to follow student requests to determine how this course will be offered.
I am shocked at this action.
in a later email, she wrote, "This action is totally inappropriate and suggests that you do not understand your role as a staff member at CSUSM."

otoh, i fixed a serious issue w/ her salons this morning and she didn't chastize me about that; apparently my role as a staff member is only an issue when it conflicts about something i was never told about. i think my role is to make sure students are served in the absence of information from the instructor.

hello. i'm gretchin, and i would like to clone myself. been showing jennifer the really boring set-up part of orientations (demo accounts, documentation & such); she's coming with me to help & to learn.

lots of last-minute requests & fixes. i -so- don't do well with last-minute requests that are due to negligence rather than circumstance.

the educ501 group took me for ice cream. :) i needed it, because therese baker is upset with me about something i feel she has no right to be upset about.

at work: i've spent more time w/ osx than online courses, however. i wish i had had super get info when i first begam using osx!

tried calling my father a few times, but, unsurprisingly, he's not home.

it's such a beautiful day: warm & cool at the same time, the sun bright but not harsh, the plants illuminated green-gold and waving gently. i'm napping, reading, listening to music, drinking lemonade, gathering star-related items, and all of this leaves me loathe to go into work and waste daylight, so i'll probably go in after the sun sets. only one class left to develop, though of course it's the most complex one.

oo, oo! the friday five is back! :)
1. How often do you do laundry?
as little as possible. i have good intentions; i think i'm going to do it every week, but then it turns into three.

2. What's in a typical wash load?
all socks & underwear and any clothing i can wear to work.

3. Front or top loader? Powder or liquid detergent?
the apartment laundry room has top-loading washers. i am a total liquid detergent kind of girl. tide, not that you asked.

4. Do you use fabric softener in the rinse cycle?
ha ha ha!

5. Dryer or clothesline?
dryer! all warm and fluffy and bounce-smelling. :D

[#] [0]
that was a heck of a blast! and i must have put out enough "i'm not here" vibes to be ignored, even with the threat of evactuation.

the membership form is coming along, though i'm having to find how much we're charging, as i seem to have forgotten. :P

the good mac osx news is that folder synchronizer came out with a carbon version of their product, so i finally have a decent way to back up onto the archos (and i don't seem to have the same problems with it as i seem to have with just copying from the finder).

[#] [0]
it was nice to sleep in, though sleeping in is now a relative term since trash day is friday for the housing development across the street. :P

i came in to work to develop the new membership form the the san diego fellow calligraphers guild; the last meeting of the year is at 7 p.m. because csusm is on a 4/10 schedule for summer, and because the builders have decided to take advantage of that by proximity blasting on fridays, we are/were supposed to be evacuated at 3 p.m. i really, really hope they forget i'm here.

snapperhead is finally working offsite! see what i'm doing second-by-second! this is way cooler than a webcam; i'm not very interesting to watching staring at a computer screen. :) otoh, i may have lost other off-site services.....

hey, i finally figured out how to enable the appleshare access logs!
http://macosx.midata.fi/info-afp-log/

[#] [0]
i am such an idiot! i managed to create more work for myself! when we did evals this spring i forgot that in fall, in addition to collating them into a spreadsheet, we had also sent them an email copy of each eval. it turns out that our stupid paper bureaucracy requires separate sheets of paper and now i have to mailmerge the spreadsheet contents into word documents. by monday. arggh!

whew! dreama says,
Oops! No don't wannna do WebCT right now. I will make a point to ask students to put their names and subject in the subject line.
i was really worried there.

[#] [0]
i haven't had time to breathe today, much less write! after 3 tulip interviews, we fortunately rescheduled a late-afternoon adapt meeting & i grabbed some lunch. dreama has emerged from hibernation and with no warning wants single-user logins rather than a general-purpose one. i'm going to cry.

i just saw the partial solar eclipse!

[#] [0]
got a call from mike irick asking about nefarious: "is it a windows machine?" no. "what webserver is it running?" apache. apparently we've had a run of code red attacks, but every time i see an entry in the access_log referencing something like "/scripts/.%252e/.%252e/winnt/system32/cmd.exe?/c+dir+c:\", i just point and laugh.

i am flush with fresh food (see nibbles) & have one of the ikea pieces assembled. the cat is well-fed and her litterbox is cleancleanclean.

it turns out the "this american life" is an excellent cd to listen to while assembling furniture. thanks, alex! :)

question of the day: why do i look like i'm coming from a legitimate user's computer when i'm dialing in? it just looked like judy jordan was accessing my computer, but it's me. this has been happening for weeks.

[#] [0]
i have travelled to the mythical land of ikea and have come back unscathed.

things i hope to accomplish today: laundry, cat food, cat box, trader joes, ralph's, clean up, unravel ikea furniture, call about the leaky ceiling & flooded doorway, pick up litter pearls from office, cards for bryana & carrie, bills.

jenn & i went to the beach last night, singing loudly to little earthquakes. i was depressed because of the psu job; she was depressed because it finally hit her she only has 3 weeks before we have no more money for her. we saw two seals: one dead, one dying.

i finally had to tell michelle that it doesn't look like i'm going to get to go to the webct conference. :(

nancy was right to be pessimistic. today she wrote:
Well, you did not make the first cut in the first go 'round, but you are on the top of the list for the second picks. The main problem is that if they were to hire you, they would have to close the search and re-open it without the requirement of the MS degree. Right now, as the position description stands, having an MS is a requirement. Everyone is afraid of a scorned applicant coming back and suing. BUT, you are pretty much what they are looking for. It's that dang degree that got in the way. I'm sorry!
and i can't say i'm surprised, but i was waiting for the miracle. will michael & i never be together?

[#] [0]
well, glad i didn't spend any moeny on vanilla sky in the theatres. i could see where they were going, and it was vaguely interesting, but i think they tried too hard. there was obviously something wrong. i prefer that everything seems normal until it isn't, which is why i liked the matrix.

oo, oo! a blog lexicon!

now off to bill's before i get distracted again. i am so far behind on work. :P

[#] [0]
after all that work, nancy is not optomistic:
By the way, you wrote a great cover letter. Unfortunately, we have several PhD level people that applied as well as a number of MS. The director is pretty fixated on hiring someone with a PhD for this position, but I will put in a good word(s) for you!
which is too bad, because i really feel like i have a kick-ass resume. (becky said, "I'm not very happy about this. This is the best resume I've EVER seen." and later, that she didn't think anyone knew i had done all that stuff.)

i also changed some of the blah apache icons on nefarious.web with ones from apple's old "personal web sharing" icons, which i like a lot better.

*gasps* spell-checked! reviewed! done! now all i need to do is turn it into a pdf and send it on its way. *pants*

[#] [0]
the last 10% always takes at least 25% of the time. i'm stuck on the essay. and as far as i can tell, darwin doesn't come with a spelling function! no "man spell," and pico ^T isn't working. i don't want to have to do my spell checks in aqua. :P

[#] [0]
849 words and i'm nowhere near done! argh! how am i going to limit myself to 1000 words?

[#] [0]
bwa-ha-ha! thank god i checked my sample links -- they were all linking to the designer url rather than the student or non-specific one -- and almost all of them went to liliana's course! heh.

okay, now the essay. after enchiladas.

[#] [0]
finally done with the samples section. now just the essay. *deep breath*

[#] [0]
i'm still not done with the psu application. i feel better, though; i was feeling pretty bad last night. i'm staying home to finish the application though i'll probably need to go in to create a pdf.

[#] [0]
ugh. after some serious working on the psu application (it's about 75% done, i think), i went home at 5 a.m., got 1.5 hours of sleep, rolled out of bed and made it back to work at 7:15, a little later than i was hoping. toni was supposed to meet me at 9 a.m. but *looks at watch* i'm guessing she's not going to make it. more time for the app, i guess. i'm really feeling pretty good about it; let's just hope i can get it out the door! (so to speak)

anyway, there really aren't that many people here. grrr. and it turns out we had exciting things happening yesterday i was blissfully unaware of: they caught a hacker using a wireless laptop to scan for ports in sweden! it's the big hoopla of the day.

working on my psu app today; i was actually dreaming about it. i was talking about this application with susan buck (chuck's gf) last night at jenn's party. since she works for the counseling & career center, she had some ideas about how to approach the whole "please look past my lack of a master's degree" issue. i've been trying to edit via pico on nefarious, but it looks like i have dreamweaver set to ^M for lines & it also looks like pico was compiled with the -w flag (or has it as an alias or something), which wraps long lines, which is making it annoying to edit.

i thought i was going to do laundry, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. still plan on going to the school to finish up summer planning.

don't forget that tomorrow begins the joy of 7 a.m. mornings!

placeholder for today, which has been just insane.
1. last color workshop
2. randall hasson's gallery opening
3. jenn's grad party
